BJP Advocates for Environmental Safeguards in Karjat Pump Storage Project
BJP emphasizes the need for environmental protection alongside development in the Karjat pump storage project amid local concerns.

Karjat, Maharashtra, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : The ongoing debate over the proposed Torrent Pump Storage Project in Karjat, Raigad district, has drawn significant attention, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation alongside development initiatives. Party leaders acknowledge the concerns of local residents and environmentalists regarding tree cutting associated with the project, urging that modern technology should provide solutions.
BJP representatives stated that development in Karjat is crucial to meet the state’s energy demands, but they also stressed that it is the government’s responsibility to protect the region’s forests and natural resources. They have called on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and both Deputy Chief Ministers to adopt advanced tree transplantation techniques to preserve trees in the area.
The party pointed out that countries like China, the United States, and Japan have successfully implemented large-scale tree transplantation practices, suggesting Maharashtra should follow suit. According to BJP leaders, an expert-led study should be conducted to explore how to safely relocate the maximum number of trees from the project area. They believe that development and environmental protection should be viewed as complementary rather than opposing forces.
Chief Minister Fadnavis defended the Karjat pump storage project, asserting its necessity for Maharashtra’s energy security. He noted that the 3,000-megawatt project would facilitate clean energy storage and reduce reliance on coal-based power generation.
Previously, Fadnavis had strongly countered opposition to the proposed hydro project, branding it as environmentally friendly and vital for the stability of Maharashtra’s power grid. He explained that while solar and wind energies contribute to clean power, they cannot operate continuously. Pump storage offers a pollution-free solution to balance renewable sources and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply around the clock.
The project has sparked discussions due to the extensive tree clearing required, leading to political tensions and concerns among environmentalists in the region.
