Bihar Police Suspends Six Officers Following Muzaffarpur Incident

Patna, March 27: In a significant administrative move, SSP Kantesh Kumar Mishra has suspended a police raid team involved in a controversial operation in the Gayaghat area of Muzaffarpur. This includes the then SHO, Raja Singh.

The decision follows an investigative report presented by SP Rural Rajesh Kumar, which highlighted serious deficiencies in the raid conducted on the night of March 17-18, 2026, in the village of Chhoraniya.

According to the findings, the police team faced violent resistance from villagers, which included stone-pelting, assaults with sticks, and even gunfire. Amid the chaos, SHO Raja Singh reportedly fired into the air in an attempt to escape, but tragically, a local resident, Jagatveer Rai, lost his life in the incident.

The investigation revealed multiple critical flaws, including the lack of adequate force and proper intelligence during the raid. The report also indicated that the team failed to exercise restraint, exacerbating the situation, and that the watchman, Prahlad Kumar, did not alert the team about potential threats or suspects.

Based on these conclusions, SSP Muzaffarpur has suspended Raja Singh, Sub-Inspector Manish Kumar, PTC Ranjan Kumar, female constable Chandni Kumari, driver constable Om Prakash, and watchman Prahlad Kumar.

Additionally, a recommendation has been sent to the district magistrate for action against the Home Guard personnel involved in the operation.

This decisive action by the district police has stirred considerable activity within the department and is viewed as an effort to ensure accountability amid growing concerns regarding policing methods and law enforcement in Bihar.

The SSP’s action came just a day after Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, visited the affected village to console the bereaved family. He also alleged that the SHO had entered farmer Jagatveer Rai’s home and allegedly shot him.
