Chandigarh, February 25: Former Haryana Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has condemned the arrest of Youth Congress President Uday Bhanu Chhib. In an interview with a news agency in Chandigarh, Hooda stated that there was no justification for arresting the chief when Youth Congress workers were merely protesting.
He asserted that the arrest is an attempt to conceal the government’s failures. Hooda described the four-day police remand of the Youth Congress chief as a clear indication of the BJP’s anxiety. He strongly denounced this undemocratic action, stating that the government is evidently scared of criticism.
“Questioning authority and standing against injustice is our constitutional right. The government, intoxicated by power, is resorting to such repressive measures to hide its failures. However, the country will operate under the Constitution, and attempts to silence the opposition in a democracy will not succeed,” he said.
Hooda also mentioned that they were preparing to surround the Assembly, demanding the reinstatement of the MGNREGA scheme, which provided employment to the poor. He noted that the BJP government had terminated this program two months ago, affecting nearly 800,000 registered MGNREGA workers in Haryana. “Their intention is to destroy the dream of Mahatma Gandhi’s Gram Swaraj,” he added.
Haryana Congress President Rao Narender Singh accused the state government of house arresting dedicated Congress workers arriving from all corners of the state for a peaceful Assembly protest. He emphasized that this clearly shows the government’s fear of public voices. “Governments that believe in democratic values engage in dialogue, not repression. When peaceful protests are obstructed, it reflects a dictatorial tendency. However, we will not waver in our commitment to uphold truth, the Constitution, and democracy. We will not stop. We will not bow down. The fight for public interest will continue,” he declared.
