Kolkata, August 20: Bank employees will visit TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s residence for KYC documentation. The Calcutta High Court issued this directive on Thursday.
This order came after bank officials informed Justice Krishna Rao’s single-judge bench that debit restrictions had already been imposed on the relevant bank account, making online KYC updates impossible.
In fact, bank officials proposed sending an employee to the MP’s home to obtain signatures on KYC documents, thus completing the offline KYC update process.
The bank also provided the court with details about the documents that Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, must submit for the KYC update.
Banerjee’s lawyer argued that his client does not need to submit documents yet, as the current KYC validity expires in December this year. He also stated that bank officials should clarify the reasons behind the debit restrictions on his client’s bank account and the blocking of his credit card.
Subsequently, Justice Rao ordered that the MP submit the necessary documents, and a bank employee would visit his home to collect signatures on the KYC documents as per the bank’s proposal.
The bench also stated that it would consider the matter of freezing the bank account after the offline KYC updating process is completed.
Banerjee’s lawyer informed the court that his client would be traveling abroad next week for eye treatment. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for August 24.
Earlier on Thursday, the court had questioned why the bank was not conducting online KYC updates and asked bank officials to clarify their stance on the matter.
The case was heard again in the second half, and Justice Rao ultimately accepted the bank’s proposal to send an employee to Banerjee’s home to obtain his signatures.
