
New Delhi, February 2: Food quantity is as important as the food itself for maintaining good health, says Ayurveda. Food does more than just fill the stomach; it provides energy and supports growth in the body.
According to Ayurveda, eating is not merely about satisfying hunger but a discipline that keeps the body’s digestive fire steady. However, most people do not know the correct amount of food they should consume.
Often, we eat to fill the stomach rather than to nourish the body. Overeating leads to sluggishness, sleepiness, heaviness, gas, and constipation. Ayurveda advises against filling the stomach completely. Instead, it recommends dividing the stomach space into three parts: half for solid food, one-fourth for liquids like buttermilk or lukewarm water, and one-fourth left empty to aid digestion and air movement.
If you feel lethargic or experience digestive troubles after eating, it usually means you have eaten more than necessary. When the body remains stable, the mind calm, and hunger returns naturally after four hours, it indicates the right quantity was consumed.
Eating in limited amounts when hungry acts like medicine, delivering nutrients effectively to all organs. Ayurveda also suggests having a light dinner since the body repairs its cells at night.
