Attempted Assassination of President During White House Correspondents Dinner

Washington, April 28: A suspect has been charged with attempting to assassinate the President during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Authorities reported that swift investigation and action prevented a major attack.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch praised the bravery and professionalism of police and security agencies for averting this dangerous incident. He confirmed that the President and all attendees at the dinner are safe.

Court documents reveal the suspect’s name as Cole Thomas Allen. He faces three serious charges: attempted assassination of the President, transporting a weapon across state lines for a crime, and firing a weapon during a violent crime.

The Attorney General noted that these charges carry severe penalties, including potential life imprisonment. He emphasized that violence has no place in a democratic system and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Investigators found that Allen traveled from California to Washington by train, stayed at the Washington Hilton, and approached a security checkpoint with a long gun on April 25. At around 8:40 PM, as he ran through the security machine (magnetometer), security personnel heard gunfire.

A U.S. Secret Service officer was shot in the chest but survived due to wearing a bulletproof vest. The officer returned fire, causing Allen to fall to the ground. He sustained minor injuries and was later arrested.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that this case represents “an attempt on the life of the President of the United States,” emphasizing that Allen made his intentions clear. She noted that the suspect aimed to target high-ranking government officials.

Investigators reported that Allen possessed several weapons, including a 12-gauge shotgun and a .38 caliber pistol. Authorities also referenced a manifesto sent before the attack, detailing his targets and intentions.

Blanch remarked that this incident was “not an accident… but the result of preparation,” revealing that Allen had booked the hotel weeks in advance and traveled with weapons across state lines.

FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that a nationwide investigation is underway. Agencies are collaborating, with teams dispatched to various states, and evidence is being rapidly examined.

He commended security agencies for preventing a major attack and ensuring national safety. Officials also expressed concern over rising political violence, stressing the urgent need to curb such violence and inflammatory rhetoric, as threats are increasing, requiring security agencies to remain vigilant.
