Kolkata, 3 January: A booth-level officer (BLO) in Dankuni, Hooghly district, West Bengal, alleged an attack on her after she reported the presence of an ‘illegal voter’ on Saturday.
The incident took place in Ward Number 2 of Dankuni, causing tension in the locality.
Bimali Tudu Hansda, the BLO of booth number 5 in Ward Number 2, claimed that she informed her senior officials about an illegal voter registered in booth number 6, adjacent to her assigned area.
Following this, she said she faced aggression from the voter Abdul Rahim Ghazi and his family members, who allegedly attacked her. Hansda also accused Ghazi’s wife of visiting her home and threatening her.
Hansda told local journalists that she had informed her superiors after suspecting the voter to be a Bangladeshi citizen. She said, “I had already notified my seniors. After that, they attacked me.”
The BLO claimed that Abdul Rahim Ghazi’s name was not on the voter list and that he had tried to register by claiming a guardian from Bardhaman district. After reporting this to her superiors, she was allegedly assaulted.
She further stated, “They hit me with a shoe. Neighbours witnessed the incident. His wife created a disturbance at my home. I have informed the police.”
Local sources said that Ghazi’s wife, Rani, works with the BLO at a nursing home, and there had been a previous workplace dispute between them. Rani claimed that the BLO was trying to drag the voter registration issue into a personal conflict.
Residents intervened to stop the clash between the two parties.
After the incident, the Trinamool Congress councillor of Ward Number 2, Sheikh Ashraf Hussain, attempted to mediate and called both sides for talks. However, the BLO did not attend the meeting and later filed a complaint at the Dankuni police station.
Responding to the allegations, Hussain said, “The Election Commission will decide who is Bangladeshi and who is Indian. The BLO who accused others of assault came with some women. If a woman holds someone by the collar and beats him in front of ten people, what can one do? Her job is to report. She cannot do all this.”
The police stated that they are investigating the complaint as well as the allegations from both parties.
