Assams Chief Minister Raises Alarm Over Excess Aadhaar Registrations

Guwahati, June 17: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed concern on Wednesday regarding the Aadhaar registration figures in certain districts of the state. He claimed that the number of Aadhaar cards issued has exceeded the estimated population, indicating a potential “demographic conspiracy” for the border state.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister noted that Aadhaar saturation in some districts has surpassed 100 percent. This suggests that more Aadhaar cards have been issued than the estimated population in those areas.

Sarma stated, “In some districts of Assam, Aadhaar registrations have outpaced the total population, raising concerns about a significant demographic conspiracy in a border state like ours.”

He added that the state government has already taken several measures to prevent ineligible individuals from obtaining Aadhaar cards. Special restrictions have been imposed on issuing Aadhaar to individuals over the age of 18. The Chief Minister emphasized, “To ensure that no ineligible person can acquire Aadhaar, we have implemented strict restrictions on the issuance process for those above 18.”

Sarma also shared a graphic indicating that Aadhaar saturation exceeding 100 percent in certain districts should be considered a “red flag.” According to him, this directly implies that more Aadhaar numbers have been issued than the estimated population in those districts.

This statement from the Chief Minister comes at a time when the Assam government is working to tighten the verification process for identity documents, particularly in districts bordering Bangladesh.

The state government has long expressed concerns about illegal immigration and demographic changes in border areas. In recent years, it has taken several steps to strengthen the verification process for government documents and beneficiaries of welfare schemes.

Government officials assert that Aadhaar registrations must adhere to established guidelines to ensure that only eligible residents receive this identification.

Following the Chief Minister’s remarks, a new debate is likely to arise in Assam regarding population data, Aadhaar registration patterns, and the identity verification system, especially in districts where Aadhaar registrations reportedly exceed estimated population figures.
