Guwahati, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Assam is taking significant strides to modernize its public transport system. The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) will implement an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) in its buses, aimed at improving passenger safety, operational efficiency, and overall travel experience.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this initiative, stating that the new system will not only make the buses smarter but also significantly safer. The ASTC buses will be equipped with cutting-edge technology to enable real-time monitoring, operational management, and enhanced passenger amenities.
A key feature of this initiative is the installation of emergency panic/SOS buttons inside the buses. According to the Chief Minister, these emergency systems will be directly linked to a control center, designed to strengthen emergency response and improve safety. The upgraded system will also support automated ticketing and e-payment, reducing reliance on traditional ticketing methods and facilitating digital payments in everyday public transport.
The government emphasizes that this technology-driven transformation aims to make the operations of the state transport corporation faster and more efficient while enhancing the safety environment for passengers.
The introduction of ITMS comes at a time when Assam is increasingly integrating technology into public services and transport infrastructure. Real-time monitoring will enable officials to track bus fleet movements, identify delays in operations, and respond more effectively to incidents on the road. This initiative is particularly crucial in a state where public buses serve as a vital link between urban centers and rural areas.
