Ashok Kumar Lahiri Takes Charge as Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog

New Delhi, May 8: The government’s think tank, NITI Aayog, announced on Friday that Ashok Kumar Lahiri has officially assumed the role of Vice Chairman.

Lahiri brings extensive experience in economic policy and public finance. He previously served as the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India and was also a member of the 15th Finance Commission.

According to NITI Aayog, his background in education, public institutions, and international organizations will enhance evidence-based policy-making and strengthen efforts related to economic transformation.

The think tank expressed optimism that Lahiri will significantly contribute to advancing India’s development agenda and reinforcing strategic policy initiatives across various sectors.

Lahiri, a prominent economist and BJP MLA from West Bengal, was appointed to the position following approval from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He succeeds Suman Berry, who held the Vice Chairman role since May 2022.

Earlier in April, Prime Minister Modi remarked that NITI Aayog has emerged as a crucial pillar in India’s policy-making framework. It has played a significant role in strengthening cooperative federalism, advancing reforms, and improving the lives of citizens.

In congratulating Lahiri and other new full-time members of NITI Aayog, Modi stated that the restructured body will serve as a dynamic platform for innovation and long-term strategic thinking across various fields.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his best wishes to Lahiri upon his appointment, along with Rajiv Gauba, Professor K.V. Raju, Professor Gobardhan Das, Professor Abhay Karandikar, and Dr. M. Srinivasan, who have also joined as full-time members. He hopes for their successful and impactful tenures.

Modi met with Lahiri to congratulate him on his new responsibilities and expressed confidence that his expertise in economics and public policy would strengthen India’s reform journey and aid in achieving the goal of a ‘Developed India.’

Representing the Balurghat constituency in the West Bengal Assembly, Lahiri has had a long and distinguished career in education, policy-making, and financial institutions.

In addition to his role as Chief Economic Advisor, he has been associated with institutions such as the Delhi School of Economics, Asian Development Bank, Bandhan Bank, and the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy. He has also collaborated with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
