New Delhi, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : The Supreme Court of India has postponed the hearing on the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta, an accused in the death case of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, until the first week of November. Mahanta is currently imprisoned in Baksa Jail alongside five other defendants. He was arrested in October 2025, just a month after Garg’s tragic death in Singapore.
During the proceedings, the Assam government informed the Supreme Court about the case’s progress, stating that witness interrogations are ongoing. As of August 14, statements from 94 out of 394 witnesses have been recorded, with several crucial witnesses in Singapore yet to be questioned.
The Supreme Court had previously directed state officials to ensure a swift trial without unnecessary delays. The court is considering the progress made in the case while reviewing Mahanta’s bail application.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most beloved musicians, died in September 2025 under mysterious circumstances in Singapore, prompting widespread mourning across the region and raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death. Following this, the Assam government ordered a criminal investigation into the causes of his death, leading to the arrests of several individuals and the initiation of legal proceedings against them.
Mahanta was among those arrested in connection with the North East India Festival held in Singapore. Investigators are examining the events leading up to Garg’s death and his presence in the city at the time.
A fast-track court in Assam has charged Mahanta and three others with murder. In total, six individuals, including Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a member of Garg’s band, have been arrested, and legal action is underway against them. As noted by the state government in the Supreme Court, the five other accused remain incarcerated in Baksa Jail.
With key witnesses in Singapore still to be interrogated, the prosecution continues to gather and present evidence. The Supreme Court is set to revisit Mahanta’s bail plea in November.
