Manipur Government Works to Repatriate Violence-Affected Residents, Says Chief Minister

Imphal, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Manipur’s Chief Minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, announced on Monday that since the formation of the new government on February 4, 2026, efforts have been underway to assist residents affected by violence and displacement. The government is focused on helping internally displaced persons (IDPs) return to their homes and villages.

During an event at the City Convention Center in Imphal, part of the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan,’ the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of rebuilding trust in the community. He mentioned that discussions have been held with representatives from various civil society organizations to address the challenges arising from the crisis.

At the event, benefits totaling ₹2,19,25,000 were distributed to eligible labor cardholders, particularly targeting displaced individuals. This assistance is aimed at supporting the education of children residing in relief camps, as well as other initiatives under the Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (MBOCWBB).

Khemchand Singh expressed concern about the discomfort of living in relief camps, noting the frustration of being unable to return home. He highlighted that innocent people in both the valley and hill areas have faced significant hardships due to the ongoing crisis.

The Chief Minister also reported positive outcomes from the resumption of the Imphal-Guwahati bus service via Dimapur, Nagaland. This service has reduced the burden on athletes participating in tournaments outside the state and students studying elsewhere, as air travel costs can be prohibitive. Currently, approximately 450 to 500 passengers utilize this public transport service daily.

In a significant development, the inter-state passenger bus service between Manipur, Assam, and Nagaland resumed on August 21, after more than three years. Khemchand Singh noted that many IDPs left their homes without any belongings, and the government is striving to meet their needs through various schemes and basic necessities. He mentioned that around 2,531 displaced individuals are receiving assistance via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), urging those who have not yet registered to do so with the relevant authorities.

Regarding the ‘Mission Pathshala,’ the state government is making concerted efforts to ensure that displaced students benefit from this initiative. Continuous meetings with representatives of the displaced population are being held to address their grievances.

Rajya Sabha MP Adhiramayum Sharda Devi emphasized that providing help and support to the needy is the government’s top priority. She praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of empowering marginalized communities and commended the Chief Minister’s courageous decision to visit the remote Jiribam district by road, prioritizing the welfare of Manipur’s residents.
