Jaipur, March 22: The political landscape surrounding the recent Rajya Sabha elections is heating up. Ashok Gehlot, the former Chief Minister of Rajasthan and a senior Congress leader, has made significant remarks regarding the cross voting that occurred during these elections.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Gehlot expressed his disappointment over the cross voting by Congress legislators in Haryana, Odisha, and Bihar during the recent Rajya Sabha elections. He stated, “It is unfortunate that our legislators dared to cross vote despite showing their ballots. Our leaders, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, are fighting to save democracy.”
Gehlot reflected on the Rajya Sabha elections held in Rajasthan between 2018 and 2023, where despite having 102 Congress legislators, the party received 126 votes for its candidates. He noted that the additional 24 votes came from legislators who were not visible to Congress observers, highlighting the goodwill and trust in the party’s high command.
He emphasized the urgent need for changes in the voting rules for Rajya Sabha elections. Gehlot proposed that if any legislator votes against the party in these elections, their membership should be revoked. He argued that merely showing a vote is no longer sufficient to prevent the ongoing corruption in the Rajya Sabha voting process.
In the recent elections in Haryana, both the BJP and Congress secured one seat each. However, there were complaints regarding the violation of voting confidentiality and instances of cross voting. Sanjay Bhatia from the BJP and Karamveer Bauddh from Congress emerged victorious, while independent candidate Satish Nandal faced defeat.
The Congress party has also issued a notice to a fifth legislator regarding cross voting in Haryana. The Congress disciplinary committee has sent a notice to Jarneil Singh, the MLA from Ratia. Previously, BK Hariprasad, the in-charge of Haryana Congress, publicly named four legislators—Renu Bala, Shaili Chaudhary, Mohammad Ilyas, and Mohammad Israel—who were involved in cross voting.
