Arijit Singh’s New Path Earns Praise from Sona Mohapatra

Mumbai: Renowned playback singer Arijit Singh recently announced that he will no longer be part of new playback singing projects. On Wednesday, acclaimed singer Sona Mohapatra publicly supported his decision.

Sona described Arijit’s move as a positive step, emphasising that stepping back from playback singing is not an end but a beginning of freedom and a new journey. She noted that this is a personal choice, likely driven by strong private reasons.

Sharing a note on Instagram, Sona stated that Arijit has set a new example in the industry. She highlighted that no one before him has taken such a significant step for themselves. According to her, “Making space for yourself, discovering your identity, and creating music on your own terms is an act of courage.”

She added that this decision could benefit many singers. Sona pointed out that many talented singers today remain limited to singing demo tracks and rarely get the actual opportunity to perform officially.

Explaining the music industry’s reality, Sona said risks are seldom taken. “The same voice is repeatedly used as it feels easier and safer. Demo singers are often unpaid and given only the lure of opportunities. Music directors sometimes grow tired and end up choosing the familiar voice,” she wrote.

Concluding her note, Sona saluted Arijit, wishing that his new path brings him happiness, satisfaction, and creativity.

She questioned why this phase should be seen as a farewell, reminding that Arijit is still making music and not disappearing. She urged the industry and listeners to embrace new voices, colours, and ideas instead of sticking to the same familiar tunes. “Do we want to eat the same flavour of ice cream all our lives?” she asked.

Sona applauded artists who choose freedom over fear, saying that this is where a new era begins.

In her final words, she saluted Arijit Singh for what he will become and praised original music that exists independently of any film ecosystem, flourishing on its own.
