Miami, August 4 (H.S.) – Argentine football icon and Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has been ruled out indefinitely after suffering a muscle injury in his right thigh, as confirmed by the Major League Soccer (MLS) club.

The injury occurred during Saturday’s Leagues Cup match against Nexaca (Mexico), just before the penalty shootout. Messi left the pitch in the 11th minute, walking off under his own power, but did not return. Inter Miami issued a statement confirming that Messi underwent a medical evaluation, which revealed a minor strain in his right thigh. His return will depend on treatment and recovery progress, meaning no fixed timeline has been set for his comeback.
The 38-year-old star has had a phenomenal MLS season so far, scoring 18 goals and providing 9 assists in 18 matches, making him one of the league’s joint top scorers.
Jordi Alba, who scored late in the match to take it to penalties, expressed the team’s disappointment: “Messi getting injured is a massive blow for us. The entire squad is deeply saddened.”
Inter Miami currently sits fifth in the Eastern Conference with 42 points from 22 matches, eight points behind Philadelphia, but with three games in hand.
Should Messi remain sidelined for an extended period, it could significantly impact Inter Miami’s campaign in the 2025 Leagues Cup, a tournament they won shortly after his arrival in 2023.
The club’s next fixture is against UNAM Pumas on Wednesday. With five points already secured in the group stage, a win could send Inter Miami directly into the quarterfinals, but they may now have to proceed without their talisman.
