Buenos Aires, March 18: Argentina’s Foreign Minister, Pablo Quirno, announced that the country has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization (WHO). In a social media post, Quirno stated that this decision was communicated to the United Nations Secretary-General through a note sent on March 17, 2025.
According to the Vienna Convention, the withdrawal becomes effective one year after the notification. Quirno emphasized that Argentina will continue to pursue international cooperation in health through bilateral agreements and regional forums, while fully safeguarding its sovereignty and decision-making capacity regarding health policies.
The Argentine government first announced its decision to withdraw from the global health organization in February of last year. During a press conference, presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni revealed that President Javier Milei had instructed the foreign minister to retract the country’s participation in this UN agency.
Adorni stated that this decision provides the country with greater flexibility to implement policies tailored to Argentina’s needs and contexts, enhance resource availability, and reaffirm its sovereignty in health matters.
Previously, on February 5, 2025, the Argentine government had made the announcement regarding its withdrawal from the WHO. Adorni reiterated that the Argentine people would not permit any international organization to interfere in their sovereignty or health-related matters.
The spokesperson clarified that Argentina did not receive any financial assistance from the WHO for health management. Therefore, he argued that this step does not represent a loss of funds for the country, nor does it affect the quality of services, contrary to what some social media users suggested.
He added that this decision allows Argentina to implement policies that better suit its needs and contexts while confirming the country’s path toward sovereignty in health matters. When asked about similar actions regarding other international organizations, he stated that he was unsure but noted that the president is clear about making Argentina more independent.
