May 22, 2025 | Technology Desk – Apple’s grip on the U.S. smartphone market remains firm, with 89% of iPhone users choosing another iPhone during their most recent upgrade, according to a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). Though this figure marks a five-percentage-point drop from 2023, Apple continues to lead the industry in customer retention by a wide margin.

In contrast, Samsung loyalty has risen to 76%, up 8 points from 68% in 2021, showing steady improvement but still trailing Apple’s near-total ecosystem lock-in. The report highlights how Apple’s integrated hardware-software ecosystem, iMessage exclusivity, and seamless device interoperability play a crucial role in retaining users.

Apple vs. Samsung: Different Playing Fields

While Samsung is the closest competitor, CIRP analysts note that Apple’s user base in the U.S. is significantly larger, making loyalty comparisons less straightforward. As of 2025, Apple holds a 52% market share in the U.S. smartphone market, whereas Samsung comes in second at 24%, followed by Motorola at 12%.

Analysts also stress that Android fragmentation makes it more challenging for Samsung to retain customers who may migrate to brands like Google Pixel, OnePlus, or Motorola. In contrast, Apple users have fewer alternatives within iOS, strengthening retention.

A Slight Decline, but Not a Concern

Despite the modest decline in loyalty, Apple’s 89% retention rate remains the highest in the industry. Analysts speculate that this drop may reflect a broader search for value in a maturing smartphone market or a response to rising iPhone prices, rather than dissatisfaction with Apple’s ecosystem.

However, without data on sample size or margin of error, CIRP’s findings leave room for cautious interpretation. Nonetheless, they underscore a persistent trend: once users enter the Apple ecosystem, they tend to stay.

Outlook for 2025 and Beyond

Looking ahead, Apple’s strategy to expand services, boost AI integration in iOS, and enhance cross-device features will likely strengthen customer retention even further. Meanwhile, Samsung’s push into foldables and AI-centric features on Galaxy devices has been gaining traction, helping the brand close the loyalty gap slowly but steadily.

With Android OEMs facing stiff competition among themselves, Apple’s control of both hardware and software continues to offer a competitive advantage in user loyalty — a metric that plays a vital role in long-term revenue and ecosystem growth.
