Madrid, May 30: FC Barcelona has officially signed England international winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. He becomes only the third English player to represent the club, following in the footsteps of Gary Lineker and Marcus Rashford.
The 25-year-old player agreed to a six-year contract worth approximately €70 million, along with an additional €10 million in incentives, after arriving in Barcelona and passing his medical examination.
According to Xinhua, the signing was delayed by seven hours due to issues with legal paperwork.
Gordon expressed his excitement, stating, “I have dreamed of playing for Barça since I was three years old. I wanted to learn Spanish because I always thought I would play football for Barcelona. I have a physiotherapist at Newcastle, and we talked every day. I told him that I would play for Barcelona one day, so I wanted to learn Spanish. I found out about Barcelona’s interest quite late, but as soon as I knew they were a serious option, there was no question.”
He further added that Barcelona is the biggest club in the world and that he has dreamed of playing for them since childhood. Gordon appeared thrilled to join the club and will link up with the England team on June 1 for World Cup final preparations.
In the recently concluded season, Barcelona witnessed Gordon’s immense talent when he played a crucial role in Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona during the Champions League group stage. Gordon joined Newcastle from his home club Everton in January 2023 and has since scored 39 goals in 152 matches for the club. Additionally, he has played 17 matches for the England national team, netting two goals.
