Guwahati, March 6: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is facing internal turmoil once again in Assam. Zakir Hussain Laskar, a legislator representing the Hailakandi assembly constituency, has announced his resignation from the party.
Laskar declared his departure on Friday, heightening political uncertainty for the AIUDF ahead of the upcoming elections. However, he has not publicly clarified the reasons behind his decision to leave the party.
His resignation comes at a time when the AIUDF is already dealing with disciplinary actions against two of its legislators for alleged anti-party activities.
The party’s central committee had suspended Abdul Aziz, the legislator from Badarpur, and Karimuddin Barbhuiya, the vice president of the party and representative from the Sonai assembly seat. Both leaders have been suspended for six years from the AIUDF.
In its suspension order, the party stated that it had been closely monitoring the activities of both legislators, which it deemed controversial and detrimental to the party’s interests. The leadership accused them of adversely affecting the party’s image and committing serious violations of party discipline.
Both legislators were reportedly supporting another party and preparing to switch their allegiance. The suspension order was issued under the provisions of the party’s constitution and was signed by Hafiz Bashir Ahmed, the AIUDF’s General Secretary (Administration).
Earlier on Thursday, Karimuddin Barbhuiya stated that the decision was made after consulting various sections of society. He wrote, “I have decided to leave the AIUDF. This decision was made in the interest of peace and harmony after consulting with people from different sections of society.”
The legislator did not provide any hints about his future political plans or whether he intends to join another political party.
