Andhra Police Officer Suspended Over Alleged Involvement in Honor Killing Case

Amaravati, April 6: A police officer in Andhra Pradesh’s Palnadu district has been suspended due to alleged involvement in an honor killing case.

District Superintendent of Police Krishna Rao announced the suspension of Circle Inspector T. Venkataraman on Sunday. He is accused of accepting money from the parents of a 22-year-old woman and handing her over to them, despite her having married of her own free will. Reports suggest that the officer’s actions directly led to the woman’s murder.

In Macharla, a woman named Choudeshwari was allegedly strangled to death by her father. She died on March 18, 2026. Initially, her death was considered a suicide. However, a post-mortem report released on April 4 indicated that it was not a suicide.

Choudeshwari had fallen in love with Nagaraju from Jammalamadaka. Her family opposed the relationship, as they had arranged her marriage to someone else. Following their decision, she ran away from home on March 4 and reportedly married Nagaraju.

Choudeshwari’s father, Chandra Srinivas, filed a missing person report with the Macharla police. Family members also protested outside the police station, accusing the police of inaction in locating the missing woman.

Subsequently, the newlywed couple was summoned by the police. During questioning, Choudeshwari informed the officers that she was of legal age and that the marriage was consensual. When community elders attempted to persuade her, she insisted on staying with her husband. Despite this, reports indicate that the police sent her back to her parents.

On March 18, Chandra Srinivas, along with another individual, allegedly strangled his sleeping daughter to death. They then attempted to portray it as a suicide.

Following the post-mortem report, police detained Chandra Srinivas and launched an investigation.
