New Delhi, March 21: Anaya Bangar, daughter of former Indian all-rounder Sanjay Bangar, has successfully undergone gender-affirming surgery in Thailand. Following the procedure, she expressed her gratitude towards her father.
Anaya shared on her Instagram account that this surgery marks a significant milestone in her journey of self-discovery. She emphasized that her father’s support was crucial throughout the process, helping her navigate the physical and emotional challenges during her recovery in Bangkok.
Reports indicate that Sanjay Bangar covered the expenses for the surgery, showcasing his unwavering support for his daughter’s decisions. Before transitioning, Anaya was known as Aryan, a boy who played under-16, under-19, and under-23 cricket.
In her Instagram post, Anaya wrote, “This journey was not easy, not just for me but for my family as well. It took time to understand, accept, and stand together. There were many questions, confusions, and learning moments along the way. Today, I feel nothing but gratitude. Having my father by my side during such crucial moments means a lot to me. His support was not immediate, but when it came, it was genuine, unconditional, and strong.”
She further remarked that the surgery was a significant step for her, but it felt possible with her father’s presence. Anaya noted that both growth and love take time, but when they come together, everything becomes meaningful.
Anaya’s gender transition became more public in 2023 when she began hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and shared parts of her journey on social media. The surgery has been a major personal achievement, allowing her to feel more aligned with her identity. However, her relationship with cricket remains complex. She previously played for Islam Gymkhana and later for the Hinckley Cricket Club in the UK, but had to step away from the sport due to regulations.
According to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) rules, transgender women who have gone through puberty as males are not permitted to play in elite women’s domestic cricket. As a result, Anaya had to withdraw from competitive cricket.
