
Kolkata, May 8: Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, on Friday. He was welcomed at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport by the state’s BJP president, Samik Bhattacharya, and former Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.
Shah is set to hold a crucial meeting with the newly elected BJP legislators. During this meeting, the leader of the BJP legislative party will be elected. In the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, the BJP achieved a historic victory, securing 207 out of 293 seats.
On social media platform X, Amit Shah expressed his gratitude, stating, “I salute the people of Bengal for their immense affection, trust, and support for the BJP.”
Following his arrival, Shah proceeded directly to the renowned Dakshineswar Kali Temple in North 24 Parganas district for worship.
Reports indicate that he will stay at a hotel in New Town, located in the northern outskirts of Kolkata, where he will have lunch. Afterward, he will convene with the newly elected BJP legislators at the Biswa Bangla Convention Center in New Town.
This meeting will determine the leader of the BJP legislative party, who will also be the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal since independence.
After the selection, the new leader and prospective Chief Minister will visit the Lok Sabha building in Kolkata to meet with Governor R.N. Ravi and present their claim to form the new government.
According to the schedule provided by the BJP’s West Bengal unit, Shah will remain at the same hotel in New Town. On Saturday morning, he will head directly to Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata for the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister and cabinet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Shah, Chief Ministers of other BJP-ruled states, and senior party leaders are expected to attend the ceremony.
Security arrangements have already been put in place at Brigade Parade Ground for the event, which will commence at 10 AM on Saturday.
