Guwahati, March 15: Union Home Minister Amit Shah made serious allegations against the Congress party on Sunday. He claimed that during its 15 years in power, Congress embezzled approximately ₹150 crore annually from Assam’s health budget. He further stated that corruption has severely weakened the public health system.
Addressing an event in Guwahati, Shah highlighted that the state of health services in Assam was dire a decade ago. He attributed this to mismanagement and corruption during Congress’s rule. Shah alleged that funds allocated to strengthen the health sector were reportedly misused for the benefit of leaders and their families, leading to a deterioration of hospitals and medical infrastructure.
He emphasized that nearly ten years ago, Assam’s health system was in complete disarray. Instead of improving healthcare services for the public, the Congress government prioritized the financial well-being of its leaders’ families. Shah stressed that both the central and state governments, led by the BJP, are committed to ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare for all sections of society.
Praising Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Shah noted that significant changes have occurred in the state’s health infrastructure under his leadership in recent years. He mentioned that Assam’s medical facilities are now rapidly reaching standards comparable to more developed states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
According to Shah, the projects launched on Sunday will further strengthen the delivery of health services in the state and improve access to quality treatment for people, especially those living in rural and remote areas.
He added that the central and Assam governments are working together to expand medical infrastructure, establish new facilities, and upgrade existing hospitals, ensuring that residents no longer need to travel out of state for better treatment. The government is continuously focusing on building a robust healthcare system that guarantees affordable and accessible treatment for every citizen.
