Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu Election Dates Announced

New Delhi, March 15: The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the assembly elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar held a press conference on Sunday to share these details.

According to Gyanesh Kumar, voting will take place in a single phase across these states. Kerala and Puducherry will conduct voting on the same day, April 9, while Tamil Nadu will hold its elections on April 23. The counting of votes for all three regions is scheduled for May 4. The Election Commission will provide 100% webcasting at all polling stations.

In terms of assembly seats, Kerala has 140, Tamil Nadu has 234, and Puducherry has 30 seats up for election next month. The Election Commission has completed preparations for voting in all three states.

Kerala has a total of 27 million voters, including 13.1 million men, 13.8 million women, and 277 third-gender voters. There are 4.5 million voters aged 20 to 29 and 424,000 voters aged 18 to 19. Puducherry has 944,000 voters, comprising 443,000 men, 500,000 women, and 139 third-gender voters.

In Tamil Nadu, the total number of voters is 56.7 million, with 27.7 million men, 28.9 million women, and 7,617 third-gender voters.

Additionally, the Election Commission reports that West Bengal has 64.4 million voters, including 32.8 million men, 31.6 million women, and 1,152 third-gender voters. First-time voters aged 18 to 19 number 523,000, while those aged 20 to 29 total 13.1 million. There are also 379,000 voters over the age of 85 and 416,000 voters with disabilities. An awareness campaign regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is currently underway.

For Assam’s 126 assembly seats, counting will also take place in a single phase on April 9, with results from all states announced together on May 4. CEC Gyanesh Kumar announced key dates for the Assam elections, stating that the gazette notification will be issued on March 16, 2026 (Monday). The last date for filing nominations is March 23, 2026 (Monday), with scrutiny occurring on March 24, 2026. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26, 2026 (Thursday). Voting in Assam will take place on April 9, 2026 (Thursday), and counting will occur on May 4, 2026 (Monday).
