Alopi Devi Shakti Peeth Temple: A Unique Worship Experience Without an Idol

Prayagraj, March 15: The Chaitra Navratri festival holds significant importance in Sanatan Dharma. This year, the festival will commence on March 19 and conclude on March 27. Over these nine days, devotees worship the nine different forms of Goddess Durga.

During Navratri, temples across the country are filled with devotees, all eager to seek the blessings of the divine. One such temple is the Alopi Devi Shakti Peeth located in the Alopibagh area of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. What sets this temple apart is that the worship is conducted without an idol of the goddess, creating a unique experience for visitors.

The temple sees an influx of devotees during Navratri. Although there is no idol to adorn, rituals are performed for nine days, reciting hymns dedicated to the goddess in her various forms.

Known by several names, including Alopi Devi Temple, Maa Alopashankari Siddh Peeth Temple, and Lalita Temple, it is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths in India. According to ancient legends, a part of Goddess Sati’s right hand fell into a sacred pond here, leading to the temple’s association with the goddess Alopashankari.

While there is no idol present, a special silver swing, covered with red cloth, is placed above the pond in the temple’s courtyard. This swing is worshipped, and devotees believe that the wrist of Goddess Sati fell at this location. They collect water from the pond and offer it at the swing, performing circumambulations as a mark of reverence.

As Chaitra Navratri approaches, the Alopi Devi Temple continues to draw countless devotees, eager to experience its unique spiritual ambiance.
