New York, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : German tennis star Alexander Zverev moved closer to his first US Open title by defeating Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-2, at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 6.
After battling through five-set matches in the first two rounds, Zverev found the third round to be less demanding. He completed the match in 2 hours and 26 minutes.
Zverev started strong, winning the first set comfortably. However, he faced challenges in the second set. The reigning Roland Garros champion had to fight off two set points against Tabilo. He saved both, broke Tabilo’s serve to take a 6-5 lead, but the Chilean fought back to force a tiebreak, capitalizing on Zverev’s serving issues. Ultimately, the 29-year-old maintained his composure and won the tiebreak to secure the set.
In the third set, Zverev continued his momentum, breaking Tabilo at a crucial moment to lead 3-2. He kept applying pressure from the baseline, preventing Tabilo from mounting a comeback. Zverev’s victory marked his sixth appearance in the fourth round of the US Open.
Next, Zverev will face Italy’s 25th seed Luciano Darderi, who reached the fourth round for the first time by defeating Australian wild card Dan Sweeney with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
In another match, American fourth seed Learner Tien achieved a career-best performance at his home Grand Slam, overcoming Jacob Mensik in a grueling five-set battle that lasted three hours and 24 minutes, with scores of 6-3, 1-6, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4. At just 20 years old, Tien became the youngest American to reach the fourth round of the US Open, matching Andy Roddick’s record from 2002.
Tien’s next challenge will be against former world number 8 Karen Khachanov, who advanced by defeating Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
