Ottawa (Canada), 16 August (Kiran News). Hundreds of flights have been cancelled due to a contract dispute between Air Canada and its employees. Meanwhile, flight attendants went on strike early Saturday morning. The airline employees’ union has alleged that despite the warning of a strike, the airline did not initiate talks since Tuesday.

According to The Globe and Mail, Air Canada announced on Saturday morning that it is cutting nearly 700 daily flights. It is estimated that about 130,000 customers will be affected by this. Air Canada stated in an X post that by 8 pm Friday, around 623 flights had already been cancelled and 100,100 people were impacted by the strike.

The union has announced protests at major Canadian airports, starting at 3:30 am (Eastern Time) in Toronto. In an interview with The Globe and Mail on Friday evening, official Natasha Stee said that both sides have not been able to agree on how to end the flight attendants’ strike, but the airline has agreed to provide hotels and daily allowances for employees.

Meanwhile, Air Canada has urged the federal government to intervene and take negotiations to binding arbitration, a move strongly opposed by the union. Canada’s Employment Minister Patty Hajdu has urged both sides to reach a contract agreement.

According to CBS, as of 12:58 am Eastern Time on Saturday, more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants went on strike. No agreement was reached between the airline and the union before the deadline. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) had given a 72-hour strike notice after midnight Wednesday. Air Canada responded by stating it would lay off employees and, from Thursday, gradually suspend flights and begin winding down operations. The airline estimates that the strike will affect about 130,000 customers daily, including 25,000 Canadians living abroad.
