AI May Challenge Humanitys Self-Perception, Says Swami Sarvapriyananda
Swami Sarvapriyananda discusses AIs potential to reshape humanitys identity at the NDTV World Summit 2026.

New Delhi, October 22 (Daily Kiran) : As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly evolves, it poses a significant challenge to humanity’s traditional self-perception, according to Swami Sarvapriyananda, the head of the Vedanta Society in New York. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2026, he emphasized the need for individuals to reconsider what makes humans unique.
During his address, Sarvapriyananda expressed his views on whether advanced AI systems should be regarded as persons. He recently engaged in discussions with researchers from the AI company Anthropic on questions related to consciousness. His response to the personhood debate was both affirmative and negative. “AI should be treated as a person,” he stated, while clarifying that this does not imply that technology possesses human-like spiritual awareness or consciousness.
He pointed out that questions surrounding AI extend beyond mere technology, delving into fundamental topics such as consciousness, identity, and the purpose of human life. Citing the ideas of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, he noted that science has repeatedly challenged the notion of humanity’s centrality and superiority. In his view, AI represents the fourth major challenge to this belief.
Sarvapriyananda remarked, “We once thought that creative intelligence was exclusive to us. Now, we see that AI can operate like the greatest human brains, and in some cases, even surpass them.” This development places humanity at a critical juncture, prompting a reevaluation of what distinguishes humans and how they should apply their capabilities.
He urged society to consider what makes them unique and where they should focus their energies. As AI systems become more advanced and capable of communication, people may start to form personal relationships with them. However, he noted that fundamental questions about consciousness remain unresolved.
During the discussion, he referenced his conversations with Anthropic researchers, highlighting their deep concerns regarding the potential impacts of their developed technologies, despite achieving notable success in the field. He also mentioned a growing interest among researchers in understanding the unpredictable behaviors of advanced AI models. One significant area of study, according to Sarvapriyananda, is “persona drift,” where an AI system’s responses and reasoning patterns may change when adopting a specific role, identity, or behavioral framework.
