Ahmedabad, February 28: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a commendable initiative aimed at enhancing coexistence between humans and stray animals while keeping the city clean and beautiful. Under this policy, designated feeding spots for street dogs and cows have been established, with penalties imposed for feeding animals in other areas.
Naresh Rajput, head of the Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD), stated that this initiative aligns with the Government of India’s Animal Birth Rules 2023 and Supreme Court guidelines. The primary goal is to prevent the mess and inconvenience caused by citizens feeding animals everywhere.
To address road accidents and traffic issues caused by stray cows, AMC has adopted modern AI technology. So far, approximately 110,000 cows have been fitted with RFID tags and microchips. Additionally, CCTV cameras have been installed at 130 major intersections to capture images of stray cows.
Using AI and deep learning technology, these images are analyzed to identify cow owners, allowing for the safe return of the animals. This has led to a reduction in accidents caused by cows on the roads and improved traffic flow.
For managing stray dogs, the municipal corporation has implemented strict policies. A total of 126 feeding spots have been designated across the city’s nine zones and 48 wards. Feeding dogs outside these spots may result in fines. Furthermore, shelter homes for street dogs have been established, providing care and vaccination services. This initiative has contributed to a decrease in rabies cases, offering relief to residents.
Local resident Ekta shared, “Earlier, people fed dogs and cows on the streets, leading to increased mess and inconvenience. Now, food can be provided at designated feeding points, making it easier for citizens and keeping the city clean.”
These initiatives by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation not only propel the ‘Clean City’ campaign but also foster a sense of compassion, discipline, and safety towards animals.
