Ahmedabad Crime Branch Busts NRI Jewellery Theft, Recovers Gold Worth Over Rs 20 Lakh

Ahmedabad Crime Branch successfully cracked a high-value jewellery theft case involving an NRI victim, recovering gold jewellery worth over Rs 20 lakh and arresting two women suspects on Saturday.

The accused, Ramilaben Parmar (28) from Vadaz and Sarla Ganwa (34) from Nirmalnagar, both originally from Dahod district, allegedly targeted passengers travelling on crowded BRTS and AMTS buses. Police revealed that the women used small children to avoid suspicion and pretended to be daily wage labourers while committing the thefts.

The victim, Saryuben, who resides in the United States, had come to Gujarat with her family to attend a religious event at the Dada Bhagwan Trimandir in Adalaj. She was carrying heirloom gold jewellery for designing purposes for her son and daughter-in-law when the theft occurred during the bus journey.

A complaint was lodged at Satellite Police Station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. A senior Crime Branch official stated that based on thorough investigation and intelligence inputs, the suspects were identified and arrested within hours, and all stolen jewellery was recovered.

The recovered items included six gold coins weighing 102.5 grams from AB Jewels, a gold bangle valued at Rs 23 lakh, and a gold necklace worth Rs 15 lakh, with a total estimated value of Rs 2.02 crore. Police are investigating whether the accused were involved in similar incidents elsewhere in Ahmedabad.

In a related case from December, Sunanda Malusare, a UK-based NRI, filed a theft complaint in Vadodara after her purse containing Rs 71 lakh in cash and jewellery was stolen during shopping. Additionally, last November, Ahmedabad Police raided a fake call centre that defrauded NRIs through counterfeit medicine schemes, arresting 24 people.
