Aditi Ashok: Indias Golfing Star Shines on International Stage

New Delhi, March 29: Golf is a highly popular sport globally, and in India, it is steadily gaining traction. Aditi Ashok is a name that has brought recognition to the country in the realm of international golf.

Born on March 29, 1998, in Bengaluru, Aditi developed an interest in golf at a young age and decided to pursue a career in a sport that was not widely popular in India. This bold decision received strong support from her parents.

At just 12 years old, Aditi participated in the Asia Pacific Invitation Tournament. By the age of 13, she had already won her first professional tour. She claimed the National Junior Championship title three consecutive times in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Remarkably, in 2014, she held both junior and senior titles simultaneously. Aditi was the only Indian golfer to compete in both the 2013 Asian Youth Games and the 2014 Youth Olympics and Asian Games.

After winning the Ladies British Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 2015, she turned professional on January 1, 2016.

Aditi became the youngest and the first Indian to win the Lalla Aicha Tour School. She secured her Ladies European Tour card for the 2016 season, making her the youngest player to win a spot in any international tour’s qualifying school.

In 2016, Aditi won the Hero Women’s Indian Open with a score of 3-under-par 213, becoming the first Indian to win a title on the Ladies European Tour. Following this, she triumphed at the Qatar Ladies Open. In 2017, Aditi became India’s second LPGA player after Simi Mehra and ranked eighth in the ‘Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year’ standings.

In 2018, she made the cut in 17 out of 24 tournaments and secured a top-10 finish twice. In 2019, Aditi made the cut in 13 out of 22 LPGA Tour events.

Aditi gained significant recognition during the Tokyo Olympics, where she narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in fourth place. Despite not winning a medal, her performance was widely praised in India. Aditi’s achievements in Tokyo not only elevated her status but also brought greater visibility to golf in the country. She also represented India at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where she was the youngest golfer in the event, finishing in 41st place.

In a country where cricket dominates, discussions about golf and Aditi are relatively rare. Nevertheless, this talented player continues to represent India in international competitions.
