Mumbai, August 3: A significant step has been taken to make Dharavi, one of Mumbai’s most densely populated areas, greener and more environmentally friendly. Under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), a new green-blue network will be developed, focusing on the rejuvenation of the Mithi River. This initiative aims to improve the environment and provide healthier public spaces for local residents. The announcement was made by Adani Group’s company, ANDPL, on Monday.
As part of this plan, approximately 40,000 trees will be rejuvenated in a phased manner across the Dharavi area. Additionally, around 200,000 compensatory plants will be planted in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to enhance the city’s green cover.
One of the key features of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project is a 3.3-kilometer public riverfront pathway, which will be developed along the revitalized Mithi River, stretching from Matunga Culvert to the riverbank.
This riverfront will be accessible to all citizens of Mumbai. It will feature viewing decks, cafes, and designated areas for cultural activities. The project will also ensure the preservation and enhancement of the river’s natural and ecological characteristics.
An official from Adani New India Developers Private Limited (ANDPL) stated that local species of trees and vegetation that absorb pollution will be planted along the riverfront. Additionally, permeable paving and bio-drainage systems will be constructed to improve rainwater drainage, increase groundwater levels, and safeguard the river’s ecosystem in the long term.
ANDPL is a special purpose company formed to implement the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, in partnership with the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group.
This riverfront project will also connect to the extensive green network being developed in Dharavi. It includes a 15-meter-wide green corridor for pedestrians and cyclists, a large central park, and several neighborhood gardens across various areas.
The official further mentioned that all these green spaces will be interconnected. Together with the rejuvenated Mithi River, this network will enhance air flow, mitigate the effects of rising temperatures in urban areas, and provide citizens with cleaner, healthier, and more accessible public spaces.
The responsibility for planting and maintaining the trees has been entrusted to Teracon Environmental Consultancy. This organization will carry out planting, irrigation, conservation, and maintenance for five years using scientific methods to maximize plant survival rates.
The organization will also be required to submit mandatory reports on the condition and survival of the plants every six months under the afforestation program. ANDPL will bear the entire cost of planting and maintenance.
The official noted that due to insufficient land within the limits of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 30,000 plants have already been planted in Chahade village in Palghar district. The project’s goal is to plant approximately 75,000 plants during this monsoon season.
