Chennai: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has questioned renowned actor Jayaram in connection with the gold theft case at Kerala’s famous Sabarimala temple. The SIT conducted the interrogation at the actor’s residence in Chennai and indicated that Jayaram may be presented as a key witness in court.
Investigators noted that Jayaram’s statement helps connect crucial links in the case and has revealed important information related to the theft. During questioning, Jayaram admitted that gold plates prepared for the sanctum sanctorum (Garbha Griha) of the Sabarimala temple were brought to his Chennai home. This detail is considered significant by the investigation team.
The SIT clarified that previous police reports had established that the gold plates were taken out of Kerala illegally. Authorities emphasized that removing temple property without official permission from the temple premises is a serious offence. Jayaram’s testimony supports the claim that the gold was transported outside the state and used publicly in religious ceremonies, thereby strengthening the prosecution’s case.
However, the SIT has confirmed that there are currently no plans to initiate legal action against Jayaram. The investigation found no evidence of any financial transactions between Jayaram and the main accused, Unnikrishnan Potty, or other suspects.
Officials further stated that Jayaram’s involvement is not linked to any monetary gain or fraud. According to the SIT, the relationship between Jayaram and Unnikrishnan Potty is purely based on religious faith. Jayaram told investigators that he had known Potty for several decades due to their shared devotion to the Sabarimala temple, which he has been visiting regularly for nearly 50 years.
Jayaram explained that Potty had convinced him that performing rituals on the new gold plates made for the temple would bring spiritual merit and prosperity. Based on this religious belief, Jayaram agreed to hold the worship of these plates at his residence.
The actor confirmed his participation in the worship ceremony of the gold plates at Smart Creations in Chennai. He also took part in a religious procession held at a temple in Kottayam, Kerala.
Jayaram stated that he was unaware of any financial irregularities or misuse related to the gold plates in the entire matter.
