Abhishek Banerjee Urges Boycott of BJP in West Bengal Elections

Kolkata, March 6: Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, called on citizens to boycott the BJP in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections. He accused the party of targeting voters through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.

Banerjee made this appeal while addressing party workers at Esplanade in central Kolkata. The protest was against the categorization of nearly 6 million individuals as under adjudication in the final electoral roll following the SIR.

During the demonstration, he urged the Election Commission to disclose how many Bangladeshis and Rohingyas were identified during the SIR in West Bengal. He mentioned that he has written to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal, requesting the publication of the final and supplementary electoral rolls in accordance with Supreme Court directives.

Banerjee stated that in 2021, some organizations had urged voters not to support the BJP. Due to the unplanned SIR, they lost 172 fellow citizens who sacrificed their lives for the soil. He emphasized that their sacrifices should not be in vain. He declared that, as representatives of 100 million people in Bengal, they should boycott the BJP this time.

In his speech, Banerjee criticized the Election Commission regarding the SIR. He noted that approximately 5.8 million names were removed from the draft list published last year. After February 28, this number rose to about 6.354 million. Overall, around 12 million people have been affected.

He alleged that BJP leaders were already disclosing such figures in public before the SIR began, suggesting that it was no coincidence. Until these 6 million individuals regain their rights, the Trinamool Congress, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, will continue to protest on the streets.

Banerjee questioned who would provide the list of those excluded and how many Bangladeshis and Rohingyas were identified. He urged Gyanesh Kumar to bring the list during his state visit from March 8 to 10.
