Kolkata, April 1: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, raised concerns on Tuesday regarding the effectiveness of the ‘double-engine government’ in Balurghat, located in the South Dinajpur district of West Bengal. He questioned whether the local residents have benefited from any central government schemes despite this political arrangement.
Citing specific data, Banerjee directly challenged the performance of Balurghat’s BJP MP, Sukanta Majumdar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Notably, the Trinamool Congress has struggled to prevent BJP victories in Balurghat during the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
With upcoming assembly elections in mind, the Trinamool leadership is refocusing its efforts on the North Bengal region. During an election campaign in Balurghat, Banerjee criticized the BJP, stating that the area has been the biggest victim of this ‘double-engine government.’ He argued that no other region has suffered as much under its rule.
For over five years, the local MP and MLA have been from the BJP, yet they have failed to secure any additional funds from the central government. Banerjee highlighted the success of the state government’s ‘Pathashree’ scheme, which has led to the construction of numerous roads, and challenged the BJP to present their report card. He emphasized that despite seven years in power, the BJP MP has achieved nothing for Balurghat.
Banerjee invited the BJP to witness firsthand the accomplishments of the Trinamool Congress government in Balurghat compared to the actions of Sukanta Majumdar’s ‘Modi government.’ He noted that residents of the neighboring Tapan assembly constituency have benefited from the ‘Yuva Sathi’ scheme, and he believes Balurghat residents deserve similar opportunities.
Furthermore, Banerjee addressed claims made by Sukanta Majumdar regarding potential increases in financial aid under the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme if the BJP comes to power. He challenged Majumdar to demonstrate the successful implementation of this scheme in any BJP-ruled state, where every woman in a family receives financial assistance. Banerjee stated on camera that if the BJP can indeed achieve this, he would vow never to seek votes for the Trinamool Congress again.
