Kolkata, July 15: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee submitted his voice sample on Wednesday at the Bidhannagar Court in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. This follows a case against him for alleged hate speech. Previously, he had ignored two consecutive notices from the same district court.
As the nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he had no choice but to appear in court and provide the voice sample, especially after a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court issued an ultimatum last week.
The High Court, led by Justice Sougata Bhattacharya, mandated that the MP either present himself at the Bidhannagar Court and provide the voice sample or face further legal consequences.
The case centers around accusations that he made inflammatory statements during a rally ahead of the recent assembly elections, including threats directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
On Wednesday, Banerjee arrived at the court at 11:55 AM. The court premises were heavily secured to protect him from any potential physical attacks or disturbances from the public, as directed by the Calcutta High Court last week.
Following his arrival, the Trinamool Congress General Secretary provided his voice sample to officials from the Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, under the supervision of a judicial magistrate and forensic experts.
Fortunately, Banerjee did not encounter any unusual situations while entering or exiting the Bidhannagar Court, thanks to the extensive police arrangements. He refrained from commenting on any questions posed by waiting media personnel in the court complex.
