New Delhi, May 6: Former Australian captain Aaron Finch has expressed his admiration for wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson, who is currently playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2026. Finch stated that Samson is the superstar CSK has been eagerly anticipating.
While speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Finch noted, “Samson struggled to score runs in the initial matches of the season. This led to discussions about whether CSK made a mistake by including him. The pressure on CSK players is immense, especially when you are traded in place of a player like Jadeja.”
He emphasized that Samson has found his rhythm and has made his presence felt within the franchise. “He is the superstar that CSK was looking for. It’s great to see him batting at a different level,” Finch added.
On Tuesday, Samson scored an unbeaten 87 runs off 52 balls against Delhi Capitals, leading CSK to an 8-wicket victory. He has emerged as the team’s most successful batsman this season, amassing 402 runs in 10 innings, including 2 centuries and 1 half-century.
Opening the innings for CSK, Samson has become the backbone of the team’s batting lineup. After the match against Delhi Capitals, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad acknowledged this fact. CSK has played 10 matches this season, winning 5 and losing 5. Samson has been named Player of the Match three times in these victories, each time delivering match-winning and unbeaten performances.
Regarded as a potential future captain for CSK, Samson was traded from Rajasthan Royals before IPL 2026 in exchange for veteran all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. This deal has proven to be beneficial for CSK so far.
