A. R. Rahmans Statement Sparks Debate on Discrimination in Bollywood

New Delhi, March 9: Recently, renowned composer A. R. Rahman’s statement has ignited a new debate in the film industry. In an interview, Rahman mentioned that he is receiving fewer work offers in Bollywood compared to before, suggesting that communal thinking might be a factor behind this trend. Following his remarks, famous musician Salim Merchant has shared his perspective.

Merchant stated that if Rahman is getting an opportunity to work on a film like ‘Ramayana,’ it indicates that he is not facing any communal discrimination.

In a conversation, Salim Merchant expressed, “I have great respect for A. R. Rahman. His concerns cannot be entirely dismissed, as every artist has different experiences. It’s possible that Rahman has encountered situations in his career that led him to feel this way. However, I believe it is not fair to view the entire film industry through a single lens. I am sharing my personal opinion, and it is not necessary for everyone to agree with it.”

To clarify his point, Merchant provided examples. He said, “If A. R. Rahman is getting the chance to compose music for ‘Ramayana,’ which is considered one of the biggest films in Indian cinema history, it is hard to believe that he is facing any form of communal bias.”

‘Ramayana’ is a project based on a Hindu mythological tale, and if Rahman has been chosen for this film, it clearly shows that his work and talent are respected in the industry. This is merely his perspective.”
