New Delhi, June 24: A significant milestone for India has been achieved with the unveiling of a statue of Maharishi Sushruta at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, one of the oldest and most prestigious surgical institutions in the world. The Ministry of AYUSH announced this event as a “moment of pride” for the nation.
The Ministry stated via a social media post, “Over 2,500 years ago, Maharishi Sushruta documented advanced surgical techniques, including reconstructive methods. These techniques laid the foundation for modern plastic surgery. His work in the ‘Sushruta Samhita’ is regarded as one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of medicine. This honor pays tribute not only to an extraordinary physician but also serves as a reminder of ancient India’s rich scientific and medical heritage.”
Furthermore, the Ministry emphasized, “As the world recognizes these contributions, the importance of understanding, preserving, and celebrating our civilization’s heritage grows. From ancient knowledge to global recognition, Maharishi Sushruta’s legacy continues to inspire generations, showcasing his contributions to healthcare and treatment.”
In another post, the Ministry wrote, “Indian heritage gains global recognition! The bronze statue of Maharishi Sushruta, regarded as the father of surgery, has been unveiled at Scotland’s Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. This statue, crafted in Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu, honors the visionary who made significant contributions to surgery and medical science that continue to inspire the world 2,500 years later. From traditional knowledge to global acknowledgment, Maharishi Sushruta’s legacy exemplifies India’s contributions to healthcare and medicine.”
Notably, Maharishi Sushruta, one of India’s great sages, is considered the world’s first surgeon. He performed plastic surgery over 2,500 years ago and developed over 300 different surgical procedures. Before conducting surgeries, he had also created around 124 different surgical instruments.
