A Dark Day for Indian Democracy: Kishan Reddy on Womens Reservation Bill Failure

Hyderabad, April 17: Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, labeled the defeat of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha as a dark day for Indian democracy.

In a post on the social media platform X, he stated that this moment called for a collective commitment to unity and women’s empowerment. Instead, it revealed what he termed a “lack of resolve.”

He accused the Congress party of denying Indian women the representation and respect they deserve by opposing the legislation. “India is watching. Our women are watching. Those who undermine their aspirations will have to answer,” he asserted.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, echoed this sentiment, declaring April 17 a shameful day in Indian democracy. He described it as a dark day for every mother, sister, and daughter in the country.

In his post, he stated, “Today, the masks of Congress and its INDIA alliance partners have fallen. By snatching away 33% reservation, these parties have committed a political sin against every mother and sister in this nation. It is disgraceful that after crushing women’s rights, they had the audacity to celebrate and chant inside Parliament. This is not just an insult; it is a betrayal of ‘Nari Shakti’.”

The BJP leader further claimed that Congress has a history of betraying women’s interests. He noted that in 2023, the government led by Prime Minister Modi passed the Women’s Reservation Bill.

“With a clear majority, Congress had no option but to support it. It was merely a formality, as there was no way to obstruct it. Now, as the time for its implementation approaches, they have once again maneuvered to prevent women from entering power corridors until 2029. Their true nature is that they exploit women for votes but keep them away from power,” he stated.

Telangana BJP President Ramchandra Rao also referred to April 17 as a ‘black day’ for the country’s women and democracy. He accused Congress and its INDIA alliance partners of betraying women.

He posted, “While Indian women are grieving, Congress is happy, smiling, and celebrating. My sisters, remember this: Congress and the INDIA alliance have denied you your rights. This is not the first time they have blocked this bill; it is the fifth time.”

Meanwhile, Telangana’s Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister, D. Sitaakka, retaliated against the BJP, alleging that the party deliberately linked the bill to delimitation to obstruct its implementation.

She stated that they have the necessary numbers for a simple majority, but they connected the bill to delimitation to terminate it. “This is not women’s empowerment; it is an electoral stunt. The BJP’s core ideology is anti-women,” she asserted.

Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury also criticized the government, stating that the failure of three bills in the Lok Sabha reflects public anger.

In her post on X, she said, “Do not dare to use our names for your political gain. The burden of rising inflation and LPG prices has affected ordinary households. Our sympathy lies with the people.”
