New Delhi: The Budget Session of Parliament officially commenced today, 28 January, and will continue in two phases until 2 April 2026. The session began with the joint sitting of Parliament, where President Droupadi Murmu delivered her address. The Union Finance Minister is scheduled to present the Union Budget on 1 February at 11 am.
During the session, the government plans to introduce several important bills, while the opposition is expected to raise economic and social issues to challenge the government’s policies.
Addressing the joint session, President Murmu expressed her happiness to address Parliament. She reflected on the previous year as a period marked by India’s rapid progress and the celebration of its rich cultural heritage. The President highlighted the ongoing nationwide observance of the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’ and paid tribute to the national poet Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. She also appreciated the special discussion held in Parliament on this significant occasion.
President Murmu recalled the teachings of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who emphasized equality and social justice, principles that form the foundation of the Indian Constitution. She stressed that every citizen deserves equal rights and opportunities without discrimination.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to genuine social justice, the President revealed that over 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty in the last decade. She noted that in the government’s third term, initiatives aimed at empowering the poor have been accelerated.
With the arrival of 2026, India has entered the second phase of this century. President Murmu described the first 25 years of the century as a time of achievements, pride, and remarkable experiences for the nation.
She added that over the past 10 to 11 years, India has strengthened its foundations across all sectors. This year, she said, would serve as a crucial milestone towards the goal of a ‘Developed India’.
The President announced historic changes to the income tax law, including exemption of income up to ₹12 lakh from taxation. She said this decision has provided unprecedented relief to the poor and middle classes and has given new momentum to the country’s economy.
The session is expected to focus on key legislative business as well as intense debates on economic and social matters, reflecting the government’s priorities and the democratic process at work.
