1,955 Candidates Compete in Upcoming Assembly Elections and By-elections: ECI Reports

New Delhi, March 27: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Friday that a total of 1,955 candidates are contesting in the upcoming assembly elections across two states and one union territory, as well as in by-elections in four states.

The commission reported that 250 candidates have withdrawn their nominations.

In Assam, which has 126 assembly seats, there are 722 candidates in the fray. Kerala, with 140 seats, has 890 candidates, while Puducherry, a union territory with 30 seats, has 294 candidates contesting.

Regarding the by-elections, three candidates are competing for one seat in Goa. In Karnataka, 34 candidates are vying for two seats, while Nagaland and Tripura each have six candidates contesting for one seat.

The ECI released data related to the assembly elections and by-elections scheduled for April 9.

On March 15, the commission announced the election schedule for the assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, along with by-elections in six states.

The last date for filing nominations for the assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, as well as for the by-elections in four states on April 9, was March 23. The deadline for withdrawing nominations was March 26, by 3 PM.

The ECI stated that the Returning Officer (RO) will publish the list of candidates in the official gazette according to the ‘Election Conduct Rules, 1961.’

The RO will securely keep all election-related documents and proceedings regarding nominations, scrutiny, and withdrawals in a sealed packet or envelope under their supervision.

Meanwhile, as part of its initiative to enhance voter convenience, the ECI will include colored photographs of candidates on the EVM ballots. Additionally, candidates’ serial numbers, names, and election symbols will be prominently displayed in capital letters for easy identification by voters.
