Shanghai, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : World number one player Alexander Zverev triumphed over Alexander Bublik in a tense match, securing his place in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters for the first time since 2019. The match, held on October 13, saw Zverev win with a score of 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1), showcasing his resilience throughout.
Zverev, who has already claimed two Grand Slam titles this year, faced a challenging encounter. He saved four set points in the first set and battled through ankle discomfort in the second. Despite these hurdles, Zverev displayed remarkable skill in the decisive tiebreak of the third set, ultimately winning after 2 hours and 41 minutes of play.
This victory marks Zverev’s 40th appearance in the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. He aims to secure his eighth title at this level and his first at the Shanghai Masters. “Unfortunately, my ankle was bothering me. It’s understandable since I’ve been playing a lot of tennis, which is a good sign because I’m playing well. I feel better physically, but I’m happy to move forward. It was a tough match as he was playing great tennis,” Zverev stated after the match.
This was Zverev’s first match since being honored as the ATP Year-End number one. Having won two Grand Slam titles in 2026, he is on the brink of solidifying his top position in the ATP rankings. If successful, Zverev would become the 30th player to achieve this feat, potentially reaching it by November 2. Current number one Jannik Sinner is out for the remainder of the 2026 season due to a knee injury, while third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz cannot surpass Zverev by year-end.
The first set was dominated by serves, with Bublik having four opportunities to win. However, he failed to capitalize, and despite leading 6-3 in the tiebreak, he lost momentum due to errors, allowing Zverev to clinch the set on his first set point.
Bublik made a strong comeback in the second set, becoming only the second player in the tournament to break Zverev’s serve. With fewer mistakes, he leveled the match. Zverev, visibly struggling with fitness, was seen frequently gripping his right ankle.
Nevertheless, Zverev rallied in the third set, overcoming a deficit to secure victory with his 14th ace of the match. This win improves his head-to-head record against Bublik to 2-3. Next, Zverev will face Alex de Minaur, who advanced by defeating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4. De Minaur reached the finals of the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing last week and has yet to lose a set in Shanghai, marking his 10th Masters 1000 quarterfinal appearance. Currently, he sits ninth in the ATP Live Race to Turin, firmly in contention for a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals.
