Munich, April 16: Alexander Zverev secured his place in the quarterfinals by defeating Gabriel Diallo 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday. He will face Francisco Cerundolo next.
The world number three maintained complete control over the match against Diallo. Zverev quickly won the first set and continued to dominate in the second. Towards the end of the first set, the Canadian player required treatment for a back issue, which worsened as the match progressed. Zverev capitalized on this, breaking Diallo’s serve in the sixth game of the second set after the Canadian hit an easy forehand out of bounds.
This victory marks Zverev’s 113th tour-level quarterfinal, solidifying his status as one of the most reliable players on the circuit. A three-time champion in Munich, Zverev is now focused on claiming another title after winning this tournament last year.
However, his upcoming match against Cerundolo could pose a significant challenge. The Argentine has a 3-0 record against Zverev on clay courts, including victories in Madrid and Buenos Aires. Nevertheless, Zverev leads their head-to-head encounters 4-3. Cerundolo advanced to the quarterfinals after a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win over Botic van de Zandschulp, showcasing impressive form on clay this season.
