Zelensky Commemorates Victory Over Nazism on Remembrance and Reconciliation Day

New Delhi, May 8: Ukraine observes May 8 as Remembrance and Reconciliation Day, marking its victory over Nazism in World War II. In conjunction with Russia’s Victory Day, both nations announced a ceasefire from May 8 to May 10. However, reports of attacks emerged even after the ceasefire was declared. On this occasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that today is a day to remember and celebrate the defeat of Nazism. It is a day when all of Europe rejoices in the end of one of the most horrific wars of the 20th century.

Zelensky took to the social media platform X, stating, “A war that should have brought about true peace. It was a time when the guns of World War II began to fall silent. That war turned our land into a battleground of relentless fighting, misuse in occupied territories, and large-scale devastation of lives and property. The Ukrainian people suffered the most during World War II, and their contribution to defeating the Nazis was unparalleled. Millions of Ukrainians fought against Nazism in various armies of the anti-Hitler coalition. Many Ukrainians were among the victors who dedicated their strength to vanquishing evil.”

He added, “Unfortunately, 81 years later, we are once again forced to confront evil, an evil that is just as entrenched. An evil that brings nothing but destruction and hostility, rooted in a mindset of enmity. It is an updated version of Nazism, branded as Made in Russia.”

The Ukrainian president stated that such Russian aggression can and must be defeated by a united free world. He expressed gratitude to all those who assist in saving lives and to those who prevent the Russian government from dictating the future. Protecting lives and the freedom of nations from Putin is a respectful way to honor those who did not allow Hitler to conquer Europe and the world.

He concluded by thanking all who fought against Nazism and liberated people. “Salute to all innocent victims of World War II! Hail to every defender who saves lives!”
