Starting today, Xbox Insiders can access a new cloud gaming feature that allows them to purchase playtime without needing an Xbox Game Pass subscription. This preview will enable participants to stream games on supported devices and provide feedback prior to a wider rollout scheduled for November.

The cloud playtime option is offered at introductory prices: $4 for 10 hours, $8 for 25 hours, and $12 for 50 hours. This pricing structure is temporary, and the final costs may change once the feature launches broadly.

Purchasing playtime grants an ad-free streaming experience, shorter wait times, and high-quality streaming, with the playtime remaining valid until fully used. This structure contrasts with other services that impose expiration dates on purchased hours.

Xbox Insiders have also been testing a free, ad-supported cloud gaming option for the past few months. This option allows limited access to games owned by the user but is capped at shorter session lengths.

Next month, Microsoft plans to introduce limits on cloud streaming for Game Pass subscribers, which will be restricted to between five and 15 hours per month, depending on the subscription tier. The new cloud playtime feature will allow users to circumvent these limits, providing a different model for gaming outside of the subscription framework.

Microsoft has not yet clarified the details regarding which specific games will be available for cloud playtime, but it has confirmed that users will be able to stream certain games, including potentially high-demand titles.

Xbox’s new pay-as-you-go model is designed to make cloud gaming more accessible and flexible for players without a Game Pass subscription. The initiative reflects Microsoft’s ongoing adjustments in its gaming offerings under new leadership, aiming to enhance user experience and engagement.
