Kerala Governors Residence Food Controversy Sparks Political Debate
BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticizes Congress over food preferences at the Kerala Governors residence, igniting political tensions.

Thiruvananthapuram, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar has launched a scathing attack on the Congress party amid an ongoing dispute regarding food arrangements at the Kerala Governor’s residence, known as Lok Bhavan. In a post on the social media platform X, he asserted that it is entirely within the Governor’s rights to decide what type of food is prepared and served at his residence.
Chandrasekhar criticized Congress, questioning whether the party would suggest asking for pork at a Muslim Malayali’s home. He emphasized that individuals have the right to have food served according to their culture and preferences. In this instance, he noted, the Governor of Kerala is entitled to determine his own dietary choices.
He further claimed that Congress has lost its sense of reason and has crossed the line into absurdity. With the government led by V.D. Satheesan having completed 150 days in office, he remarked that citizens are left asking, “What have we gained?” He pointed out the lack of discussion on the five guarantees promised by the government and the initiative “Puthu Yugam Keralam.”
Chandrasekhar also highlighted the party’s avoidance of pressing issues affecting Kerala’s youth and families struggling with a shortage of medicines. Instead, he accused them of focusing on the new Governor’s eating habits, calling this a reflection of Rahul Gandhi’s misleading political tactics.
The controversy erupted following reports that the new Governor, Om Prakash Mathur, had instructed a ban on the cooking and serving of non-vegetarian food within the Raj Bhavan premises. However, the Lok Bhavan administration later clarified that there is no outright ban on meat. The restriction applies only to the kitchen where food for the Governor is prepared, as he adheres to a strict vegetarian diet.
The administration also stated that staff and others are free to bring and consume their preferred food. Despite this clarification, the political dispute has intensified, with Congress and CPI(M) leaders criticizing the Governor’s alleged directives as an attempt to impose personal dietary choices on others.
Congress leader K.C. Venugopal emphasized the diverse food culture of Kerala, asserting that people should have the right to choose their own meals. Meanwhile, CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan accused the party of attempting to politicize the issue of food.
Even after the clarification from the Governor’s residence, the matter continues to be a hot topic in the state’s political discourse.
