New Delhi, August 6: Wrestler Sushil Kumar has faced a setback as the Delhi High Court denied his bail application in the murder case of fellow wrestler Sagar Dhankhar. The court rejected Sushil’s plea on Thursday.
Sushil Kumar challenged the Rohini Court’s decision to deny regular bail on February 6. He is currently in judicial custody, facing charges related to the murder of Sagar Dhankhar, which occurred in 2021.
The tragic incident took place on the night of May 4-5, 2021, at the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. Reports indicate that Sagar and his companions were forcibly taken to the stadium, where they were brutally assaulted with sticks and hockey sticks. Sagar succumbed to his injuries during hospital treatment due to severe head trauma. The post-mortem report revealed that he suffered a serious brain injury from a heavy object. Sushil Kumar has been named the primary accused in this case.
Sushil Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell on May 23, 2021, and has been in jail since then. In October 2022, the trial court framed charges against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, criminal conspiracy, and rioting with deadly weapons. Additionally, charges were filed under the Arms Act. The court granted him a week of interim bail for knee surgery on July 19, 2023.
Before being implicated in the murder case, Sushil Kumar was regarded as one of India’s most esteemed and successful wrestlers. He won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, bringing pride to the nation.
