Shimla, August 3 (H.S.) – Known for its scenic beauty and apple production, Shimla is now gaining a new identity for its unique apple barfi. Women from the aspirational development block Chauhara in the district have created this innovative delicacy through the Jai Devta Jabal Narayan Self-Help Group. Their dedication and skill have led to a growing demand for the product across the country.

Group member Sapna shared that the apple barfi is prepared entirely through organic methods. Carefully selected high-quality apples are first washed, then pulped and cooked for a long time. Dry fruits are added during the process, and once the mixture turns a deep brown, it is spread on plates and left to set for three to four days. Afterward, it is cut into small pieces and packaged. Remarkably, the barfi stays fresh and fungus-free for up to a year while retaining its taste.
Each box of apple barfi is priced at ₹325 and is available at the ‘Aspirational Haat’ stall near Padamdev Complex at the Ridge. The group also offers online delivery. Currently, they are selling around ₹35,000 worth of barfi every month, with demand coming from districts including Kullu and beyond.
The group began in 2019 when five women from Jabli village started pea farming with the help of NRLM and an initial amount of ₹15,000. In the first year, they earned ₹75,000, which grew to ₹2.5 lakh the following year. The group then diversified into producing apple cider vinegar, jams, chutneys, pickles, juices, and dried fruits, but the apple barfi has now become their signature product.
Group president Ashu Thakur said that they consistently maintain product quality through hard work and have received opportunities to set up stalls at fairs with support from the state government. Chauhara NRLM Mission Executive Kushal Singh added that similar groups will be encouraged in tribal regions like Dodra Kwar to create new livelihood opportunities.
Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap praised the work of self-help groups in the district, noting that the administration is supporting them with training, stalls, and other facilities. He stated that demand for local products is increasing both nationally and internationally, providing rural women with a path to self-reliance.
