New Delhi, April 19: The first six weeks following delivery, known as the Sutika Kaal in Ayurveda, are a delicate and essential period for both mother and baby. This timeframe is crucial for physical and mental recovery. Without proper care, mothers may face weakness, infections, or long-term health issues, while the newborn’s development can also be adversely affected.

According to Ayurveda, a woman’s body becomes significantly weakened after childbirth due to the loss of energy and blood. An increase in Vata dosha can lead to pain, fatigue, restlessness, and digestive problems. Therefore, restoring balance during these six weeks is vital.

Rest and appropriate care are paramount during this period. Mothers should be given ample time to recuperate so their bodies can return to their natural state. Gentle oil massages can enhance blood circulation, alleviate pain, and help the uterus return to its normal size.

Ayurveda recommends a light, warm, and nutritious diet during this time, including moong dal water, porridge, warm soups, and light meals enriched with ghee. Such foods help restore strength and improve milk production. Heavy, cold, and gas-inducing foods should be avoided, as they can disrupt digestion.

Breastfeeding is considered extremely important during this period. Mothers should initiate breastfeeding within the first hour after birth. The initial milk, known as colostrum, is highly nutritious and boosts the baby’s immunity while fostering an emotional bond between mother and child.

Mental well-being is also emphasized in Ayurveda. Mothers should strive to remain calm and happy, as stress, anxiety, and anger can negatively impact their health and the quality of milk. Family support and emotional reassurance are crucial during this time.

Maintaining cleanliness is equally important. Proper hygiene, care, and the use of light medications or herbal remedies can help prevent infections. Ayurveda suggests the use of natural elements like neem and turmeric for their healing properties.
